Tragedy hits one of the temple’s long-term devotees
The family of Vijaya Raghavan Lakshmanan continues to mourn the sudden loss of a beloved husband, father, son and a brother on Friday, February 10, 2006 under extremely tragic circumstances. The funeral took place on February 15th at the Wages and Sons Funeral Home in Stone Mountain. Well over two hundred members of the community attended it. Our priest, Sri Mallikarjuna Sarma guided the family in performing the last rites. Lakshmanan and his family have been ardent devotees and long term volunteers of the temple. Devi is the part time manager of HTA. The temple community offers heart felt condolences and prayers to the family.
Any contributions to support the family may be made to: The HTA/In Memory of Vijay Lakshmanan.

Great Composers Day Celebrations:
Tyagaraja Aradhana
The Carnatic Music Association of Georgia (CAMAGA) jointly with the Hindu Temple of Atlanta celebrated the Great Composers’ Day on February 11th and 12th. On the first day of the function, over 190 children and adults participated by singing the compositions of the Great Composers of Carnatic music. It is heartening to note that the numbers of young children participating in the program has been growing every year. The second day function began with Dr. Prasad Kancherla formally inaugurating the event. This was followed by group singing of Pancharathna kritis and later by a three-hour concert by Palghat Ramprasad. The celebrations concluded with group singing of Utsava Sampradaya kritis followed by aarthi.
A wonderful and hilarious article on the recent Tyagaraja Aradhana celebrations at the temple, written by Dr Ram Sriram, president of Carnatic Music Association of Georgia was published in the “online magazine” from Chennai. Those interested can log on to www.chennaionline.com and click the music section to get to the full printed version. It is a “must read” piece of journalism. |

Children’s education and deal with issues such as public versus private schooling, extra curricular activities, SAT classes, private tutoring and enrolling in accelerated learning classes, applying for financial aid and scholarships. Mrs. Kalpana Raju, Principal of Hembree Springs Elementary School in Roswell, will moderate this.
The second session, moderated by Dr. Suvrat Bhargave, a Child

Lecture Demonstration on Carnatic Music Theory
On Saturday, February 24th, Dr. Ram Sriram, President of The Carnatic Music Association of Georgia (CAMAGA) gave a lecture demonstration on the theory, practice, and appreciation of Carnatic music at the HTA Chinmayananda lecture hall. Over 130 people attended the lecture. The most impressive part of the lecture-demonstration was the presence of numerous children who are learning music. Moat of them sat through the entire 4.5 hours of the lecture, took notes and actively participated by asking complex theory questions. This was a very fulfilling experience for parents, teachers, and the organizers. |
Maha Sivarathri Festival
Maha Sivaratri was observed on Sunday, Feb 26th in a very devotional way. Thousands of devotees came to the temple. The Siva temple was very colorful and radiated the positive energy of the occasion, with priests performing the various poojas, and abhishekas. When the second Abhishekam was completed before midnight, there were still more than one hundred and fifty devotees in the temple. The temple was open till 5:30 Monday morning and at that time there were more than 25 devotees, who stayed up all night. The Siva temple priests also stayed with the devotees. Every one of the priests worked all week, leading up to Siva Ratri, making this a very powerful and memorable occasion. The Sahasra Lingarchana that was performed on Saturday, 25th was another large event preceding Siva Ratri. The kitchen staff and volunteers did a marvelous job of providing fresh food for the thousands of devotees past mid night Sunday. |
